Jung A Lee
Biography
Jung A Lee’s practice explores unconscious states related to identity, vitality and inner experience. Her paintings can be described as inner landscapes.Influenced by growing up in a traditional Korean village shaped by generations of her family, she developed a close relationship with nature. The curling, climbing forms that recur in her paintings can easily be read through a human perspective as struggle or adaptation. However, the core of her work lies not in the visible form itself, but in what generates it: persistence, a sustained vitality. Forceful lines, lines formed slowly over time, and confident, freely drawn lines intertwine and influence one another, creating rhythm across the surface. She was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1995. She currently lives and works between Germany and South Korea. She graduated in Fine Art and Painting at Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin with a Diploma (equivalent to a Master’s degree) in 2022 and Meisterschüler(postgraduate degree) program in 2023. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions, including Anthill at Weserhalle Galerie, Berlin (2023), and Dry Grass in a Fire at Solgeo Art Museum, Gyeongju, South Korea (2024). Her work weaves together distinct Eastern and Western cultural foundations, combining symbols drawn from dreams, everyday life, myths.
Artist Statement
Lee Jung A captures ephemeral feelings with sensitivity as they arise in dreams and daily life, exploring their meanings and bringing them to visual life through symbolization, metaphor, and abstract forms. At the beginning, these elements exist without distance between body and thought. Among these abstract elements, certain symbols become clear and strong. She focuses first on these clear symbols before exploring other elements. This directness allows her to work intuitively and without interruption. Elements in her paintings do not act as codes to be deciphered, but work as a riddle that mediates between the self and others.
Lee shows a particular affinity for wax pastels in her working process. This dry medium can be used directly without drying time, allowing for unrestrained lines guided by unconscious impulse.
